In their work with vulnerable people in south Nottinghamshire, Trent Vineyard Church found that they were frequently coming into contact with people who had housing difficulties, as well as other complex social needs. The 16-25 year olds age group was noticed as an area with particular cause for concern, due to the limited provision of supported accommodation in the county. Cedar Housing was established to provide part of the answer to this gap in service provision.
In looking to provide a high-quality service, Cedar Housing looked for a partner with whom they could work. Aquila Way has run award-winning housing and support services for twenty-five years in Gateshead, and we are franchising the model for Cedar House from their successful Naomi House support project. Hence, Aquila Way are contributing their expertise and experience as we begin the journey of running our own housing and training services in Nottingham.
We opened Cedar House, a 10-bedroomed service, in May 2009. Our staff work as relief workers, support workers and night support workers, providing 24-hour cover in the house. We also have volunteers who act as befrienders for residents.
At Cedar House we enable young women to physically and emotionally step back from vulnerable housing circumstances and homelessness, and the associated risks of crime, poor health and long-term unemployment. We provide opportunity for personal and life-skills development within an environment that celebrates community and encourages personal growth, respect, hope and improved confidence.
Our aim is to give our residents hope for a better future by believing in them, helping them to believe in themselves, and enabling them to plan and acquire the skills to achieve their own goals.
"Staying at Cedar has helped me to have a better relationship with my family"
"I have been able to make really good friends and have the support I have needed. Staying at Cedar House has helped me to become more confident and to understand how to be able to live with the money that I have."
(Without Cedar Housing) "...I would worry everyday about where I would sleep next, I wouldn't be doing college and I would still be in a very controlling environment."
"It's a fab house."
